The first core competency set forth by NASPAA is the ability to lead and manage in public governance. This involves promoting policy development and implementation, creating a professional workforce committed to public service values, and helping employees reach their potential and fulfill their professional goals. To illustrate this competency, I've chosen the following coursework:
Being able to lead and manage as a public administrator effectively is vital to the population in which one serves. My ethics reflection assignment allowed me to look greater into how my personal beliefs, ethics, and personality contribute to my leadership style and abilities. I believe that it is essential for public administrators to have strong ethics because persons who are elected officials yield great power. The same power that they use to benefit the people they represent; they could also use that power to harm as well. This assignment better prepared me to connect my personal and professional morals and leadership style while facing ethical dilemmas. It is my goal to lead others and to help them better understand the importance of education and educational policy. Therefore, I the realistic components of this assignment has better equipped to modify my leadership and management style to serve better and achieve the desires of the people that I am leading regardless of the position in which I may serve.
As a public administrator, being a good steward of taxpayers’ dollars is one of the most important parts of the job. Completing a budget during my financial administration course which included revenues and expenditures, gave me direct experience in being seeing how to sustain the leadership, longevity and economic health of an organization. By not utilizing public resources most effectively and efficiently, there is the potential for me to be viewed as an incompetent leader. The city of Auburn budget analysis project has prepared me to take on a position that may have financial accountability component. Through analyzing the City of Auburn's budget, examining different variations of budgets, and budget forecasting, this assignment has given me the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to analyze a budget and project outcomes. This project also presented me with challenging situations where we had a specific amount of money to allocate for projects and the desires of our constituents were greater. We had to critically think and analyze how we were going to lead and manage as the city administrator.
